EMS crews from Comandos de Salvamento participated in a mass casualty response simulated disaster of a make believe airline crash at the Comalapa International Airport. Red Cross, The Salvadoran Fire Dept, Green Cross and Comandos were observed and supervised by “CEPA” Comisión Ejecutiva Aeropuertaria in order to demonstrate skills in case of a mass casualty incident.
CDS transported ten patients to nearby hospitals that were also participating in the simulated excercise. Triage tags were used on “patients” depending on the level of care needed. Below is a universal triage tag with symbols designating patient care .
This last Tuesday, October 13th, a disaster awareness and mitigation fair was held at the Plaza Gerardo Barrios. Dozens of volunteers and members of nongovernmental organizations that comprise the Standing Committee for risk management in ElSalvador, celebrated the International Day for Disaster Reduction. CDS participates as one of the groups most able to help the most vulnerable since disasters have been commonplace in El Salvador.
The CDS education department has an EMS school called “Escuela de Comandos de Salvamento,”Yolanda Elizaberth Ramírez”-named after a Comandos who died in the line of duty.
The school prepares medical students from the University of El Salvador, and other students from other institutions in pre-hospital patient care. The course is taught by Comandos Luis Kolatto, lead EMS educator. The courses take place every Saturday.
