CDS 30 Years Ago: Oscar Romero

Today is the thirtieth year anniversary of the murder of San Salvador Archbishop Oscar Romero y Galdamez. Comandos de Salvamento was there during his burial.

Video Footage by Journalist John Hoagland. Comandos de Salvamento/Green Cross picking up the injured in front of the San Salvador Cathedral March 30 1980. Minute 5.23 in the video below.

On the thirtieth of March, during his funeral and burial at the downtown cathedral there was a gunfight. *National Guard snipers were present on the roof of the National Palace adjacent to the cathedral and allegedly shooting attendees. Some in the crowd were armed as seen in the video. Addendum by Marco* The Comandos de Salvamento, who were known back then as the Green Cross, and attended to the injured alongside the Boyscouts of El Salvador.

Some of the Comandos present then are still active working with the institution and they maintain the memory of Romero strong in their hearts and spirit. Fotos: Francisco Campos (rights reserved)
