After an intensive search by lifeguards, emergency responders, rescuers, and members of the Air Force and Navy, as well as Protección Civil’s Tactical Team and the Policía Nacional Civil, the body of young Wilber Enrique Sánchez Martínez was located.
His body was found five kilometers from where the tragedy occurred on the morning of Sunday, June 2, at Playa Escondida. Fishermen located him at Playa El Palmarcito.
The young man had been part of the Comandos de Salvamento delegation in El Salvador, based in Lourdes, Colón, La Libertad, for three years. He had also been a member of Protección Civil’s Tactical Team in Nejapa for two years.
Wilber Enrique was among the volunteers who founded the Comandos de Salvamento branch in Lourdes, eventually becoming Deputy Branch Director, where he stood out for his high level of humanitarian service.
According to one of Wilber Enrique’s colleagues, every night that he worked his shift as a rescue worker, he would leave at around three in the morning for the home of his grandmother, Lilian Martínez, so he could help her cook corn and distribute tortillas.
Wilber Enrique had remained under his grandmother’s care from a very young age. He received his education and his strong spirit of service from her. For that reason, he had been part of a rescue organization in the area, and in November 2021 he was one of the founders of the Comandos de Salvamento in El Salvador, based in Lourdes.
The Board of Directors and Executive Directorate of Comandos de Salvamento in El Salvador thank every volunteer and authority who participated in the search for and recovery of the body of Wilber Enrique Sánchez Martínez. The 23-year-old will lie in state in Nuevo Loudes, where he lived, and will later be given a Christian burial.
