People were struck by the fireworks, which caused them burns.

What appeared to be the traditional celebration of Chinameca’s patron saint festivities turned into a tragedy when the fireworks display announcing the festivities in that city in the eastern part of the country got out of control.

The fireworks display announcing the arrival of the float transporting the image of the Divine Savior of the World as it arrived at the San Juan Bautista parish church got out of control, causing the fireworks not to rise and instead shoot into the crowd of worshippers.

For several minutes, people ran to seek shelter from the fireworks exploding near those in attendance, causing them first- and second-degree burns.

Comandos de Salvamento of Chinameca, together with PNC and other relief agencies, assisted the victims to stabilize them and subsequently admitted them to Nueva Guadalupe Hospital.

Nearly 30 people were burned during this tragedy that overshadowed the celebration.
