Comandos de Salvamento de El Salvador and the Medical Emergency System conducted a search together with the Policía Nacional Civil to locate and rescue 18 national tourists who became lost in the Boquerón area.
The tourists, both men and women, began a hike in the morning, but in the afternoon, some of them had lost contact with several others, so they requested assistance from Comandos de Salvamento, PNC and SEM.
In the afternoon, the tourists were located in the western area of Boquerón. Two of the women experienced symptoms of hypothermia. Comandos de Salvamento de El Salvador evacuated one of them; she had to be evacuated on a stretcher and taken by SEM to a medical facility.
The low temperatures generated on the San Salvador Volcano disoriented the tourists. However, all of them were taken to safe locations and later returned to their families.
