During the Christmas and New Year’s festivities, Comandos de Salvamento of El Salvador provided assistance in several emergencies that were reported, especially the increase in traffic accidents that left people dead and injured.
Statistics from government authorities indicate that 49 people lost their lives in traffic accidents, while the injured exceed 300 victims who were taken to the country’s various healthcare centers.
Some of the traffic accidents were caused by drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol and left their passengers injured. Such is the case of a person who was driving his vehicle in an apparently intoxicated state and caused a traffic accident on the old highway to Zacatecoluca, at the height of the curves of Caserío La Flecha and Río Jiboa, on the boundary between Santiago Nonualco and El Rosario, La Paz.
Another traffic accident was reported on Carretera Litoral at the height of Cantón El Carao, Caserío La Bomba, within the jurisdiction of San Juan Nonualco, where Mirna Pineda, departmental coordinator of Social Welfare of La Paz, was injured, reportedly after trying to avoid running over a dog, causing her to crash into a tree.
Comandos de Salvamento of El Salvador treated at least two adults with burns caused by fireworks, who were treated at the institution’s emergency clinics.
Members of the lifeguard corps of Comandos de Salvamento of El Salvador set up posts at Lake Ilopango. At Playa Mono, in Sonsonate, the lifeguards and the Policía Nacional Civil joined the search for a minor who drowned in that area.
The Board of Directors and the Executive Directorate of Comandos de Salvamento of El Salvador thank each of their volunteers for making the mission of helping people in need possible, for every day of effort to cover their shifts during emergencies, and for their courage to continue serving despite the limitations, but with that great heart that shows that we are here for the Salvadoran people and that is how we will continue in 2024.
