Members of Comandos de Salvamento, personnel from Protección Civil recovered Nancy Verónica Mejía’s body.

The constant rains that have affected the national territory in recent hours have caused the first death of a woman in Ciudad Delgado, as well as the evacuation of families in San Martín.

Comandos de Salvamento were alerted early this morning about the collapse of a temporary wall at the end of Colonia Beatriz, in Ciudad Delgado, where Nancy Verónica Mejía Cruz, 31, lost her life after being buried in her room, where she was resting early this morning.

The volunteers from Comandos de Salvamento, together with Protección Civil and Army members, recovered the body to take it to the community center so that it could be identified by the authorities from the Legal Medicine Institute.

Nancy Verónica Mejía Cruz lived with her parents, who were unharmed in the collapse of the temporary wall built with old tires. Due to the accumulation of water, it gave way and fell onto the humble home.

Meanwhile, in colonia Bonanza #1, located at kilometer 14½ of the Pan-American Highway, in San Martín, San Salvador Este, Comandos de Salvamento evacuated an elderly woman along with other people after the stairs connecting the homes collapsed.

The elderly woman had to be evacuated by Comandos de Salvamento rescuers and members of the Air Force, who took her to a safe place. Likewise, seven other people were brought to safety due to the possibility of more rain affecting the country in the coming hours.

In response, the government of President Nayib Bukele has declared a yellow and orange alert along the country’s coastal strip.

Roberto Cruz, executive director of Comandos de Salvamento, has called on all its delegates to remain alert due to the rain expected to affect the country in the coming hours.

There are landslides on several roads in the eastern part of the country and earth slides in various areas, so he is urging the public to remain alert.

The body is taken to the community center in Colonia Beatriz to be identified by the corresponding authorities.
