What had been a joyful afternoon almost became a tragedy on the road from Cantón San Luis in the Municipio of Nueva Guadalupe, San Miguel, when the strong winds accompanying the storm brought down a tree onto a truck transporting players and fans who were traveling to Moncagua.
Comandos de Salvamento de El Salvador, Jucuapa branch, assisted the victims, including the truck driver, in the vehicle carrying nearly 40 people. The falling tree destroyed the cab, where at least three people were riding; they suffered severe trauma.
Comandos de Salvamento rescuers freed the driver, identified as José Mario Romero, 61; Rolando Sebastián Losa, 22; Santos Porfirio Díaz, 34; and María Esperanza Bosques, 31, all originally from Moncagua. In addition, four more people were admitted to Nueva Guadalupe Hospital.
The total number of injured people was 22, including players and fans, who were assisted by sister organizations and PNC agents.
The strong winds also brought down trees onto the road from Alegría to Santiago de María, as well as toward Berlín. Comandos de Salvamento de El Salvador, from the Alegría and Berlín branches, are working to remove the trees so that vehicular traffic in the area can be restored.
