19 YEARS OF A TRAGEDY

19 years ago, a powerful earthquake shook El Salvador, leaving nearly one thousand people dead, injured, and thousands homeless.
One of the worst scenes was in Santa Tecla, where part of the Bálsamo mountain range buried the Las Colinas housing complex, where hundreds of families were surprised by the landslide that buried their homes.
Comandos de Salvamento was one of the first emergency-response institutions to deploy hundreds of volunteers to assist survivors and recover the bodies that remained beneath tons of earth.
Comandos de Salvamento spent several days helping search for survivors and recover the bodies, which their relatives awaited so they could give them a Christian burial.
Nineteen years after this tragedy, and in view of the constant earthquakes affecting our country, the public is urged to keep daily medications, bottled water, nonperishable products, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, among other items, readily available.
In addition, people are asked to remain calm and seek safe places in the event of an earthquake.
