COMANDOS REMEMBER EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

Today marks 35 years since a powerful earthquake destroyed the Salvadoran capital. The clock showed 11:49 on October 10, when the earthquake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck.
From that moment, Comandos de Salvamento activated its volunteers, who were insufficient to handle all the emergencies, as rescue efforts focused on the Rubén Darío Building and the Santa Catalina Girls’ School in Barrio San Jacinto, where more than 40 girls lost their lives.
Now, 35 years after that tragedy, Comandos de Salvamento pay posthumous tribute to all those 1,500 people who died in this fateful earthquake, which destroyed most of the Salvadoran capital.
Today, new generations of young volunteers laid flowers in memory of all those who died.
Rescuers train day after day to be prepared for emergencies and to use techniques that shorten the tasks involved in rescuing victims.
They subsequently carried out a drill in Morazán Plaza to demonstrate the rescuers’ response capacity.
